New Mattapan Health Center Shows Neighborhood’s Strong Side

Patriots Player Vince Wilfork and his wife Bianca recently toured the new Mattapan Community Health Center building now under construction on Blue Hill Avenue in the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston. It’s due to open in mid-summer, 2012.

Mayor Menino & Governor Patrick enjoy the moment at the recent 16th annual “Rock the Boat” gala at Boston’s waterfront Renaissance Hotel in support of the Mattapan Community Health Center. Both the mayor and the governor were hand to accept Community Health Pinnacle awards.It’s the 16th annual “Rock the Boat” fundraiser and marks the Center’s 40th anniversary.

The event drew hundreds of people to the Renaissance Hotel on Boston’s waterfront on Saturday, April 28, 2012 – to support the Center’s health programs and celebrate its 40th anniversary. Rooney was a co-chair of this year’s event.

Supporters of the Mattapan Community Health Center hit the dance floor at the recent “Rock the Boat” gala fundraiser for the Center’s health programs. Held at the Renaissance Hotel on Boston’s waterfront, the 16th annual fundraiser marks the Center’s 40th year and heralds the opening of its new health facility set to open in the summer of 2012.

The Beat of Boston was developed as part of the vision to position the city of Boston as the leading-culturally thriving, inclusive and influential tourism destination in all of North America.

This multicultural tour concept seeks to celebrate the different ethnic backgrounds of the Boston’s South End, Chinatown and Lower Roxbury. The tour highlighted the history, food and arts and culture of these neighborhoods.

Black Entrepreneurs of the 18 & 19th Centuries

Entrepreneurship has always been a way for Americans to climb the economic ladder. Black Americans also took part in this American dream beginning when slavery was still legal in this country. The exhibit, Black Entrepreneurs of the 18th and 19th Centuries, tells the stories of some of the enterprising black entrepreneurs from the Revolutionary period through the 19th century in Boston and New England.

These bold men and women ran small-scale and large-scale commercial enterprises, ranging from home-based businesses and small shops to regional, national, and international companies. They developed products, selected markets, created economic networks, invested strategically, and sought to balance risks and rewards, costs and profits. They put people to work, built wealth and gave back to the community.

Initiative for Diversity in Civic Leadership

The Initiative for Diversity in Civic Leadership (IDCL) provides education and training opportunities to enable individuals from diverse political backgrounds to successfully run for elective office, manage and run political campaigns, and serve in all levels of government. The IDCL program at Suffolk University offers courses in Leadership, Public Policy, Candidate Training and Public Administrations. The program is free but participants must apply and be accepted to the program.

Client Partners: Oiste provides the means to develop a new generation of leaders of color committed to public service so as to ensure a more representative democracy and a diverse civic community in Greater Boston.

The Massachusetts Black Business Alliance (MBBA) is a collaboration of African American owned businesses whose core purpose is to influence the business environment and promote economic advancement of its members and the greater African American business community.

This particular summit featured Governor Patrick who discussed business issues of concern to African American entrepreneurs.

Our Public Spirit

Our Public Spirit (OPS) is a multi-year initiative to promote philanthropy among African American and Asian Pacific Islander women throughout the Greater Boston area. OPS explores the giving traditions and practices among women of color and works to expand their support for social change and social justice work.

The goal of the project is to connect people, communities and organizations to achieve positive social change through philanthropy. OPS seeks to (1) increase donors of color for social change philanthropy and (2) increase women of color in leadership roles in the philanthropic community.

Client Partners: Boston Women’s Fund in collaboration with Haymarket People’s Fund and the Women’s Theological Center (WTC).

Rose Kennedy Greenway

Opened in 2008, The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway is a series of four parks within a curvilinear corridor of land extending approximately one mile through downtown Boston.

The Campaign for Proficiency

The Boston Campaign for Proficiency is a multi-year initiative to cultivate a “culture of achievement” across Boston neighborhoods: a self-sustaining, community-wide set of activities, behaviors and attitudes which ensure that successive generations of Boston youth are academically proficient people of strong character. It also provides a catalyst for community members to act on what they believe and what they, as a whole, can do to actively support concrete and specific proficiency goals.

The core of the Boston Campaign for Proficiency is the “Get Smart” mindset which is the belief that all young people have the intellectual potential to handle challenging, complex work and to show strong character. The first step is believing in yourself.

Client Partners: A consortium of community, school and campaign partners including the Efficacy Institute, Inc. and the School and Main Institute.

KCA Assignment: Branding, media relations, outreach and website development.

the84

The 84 is a movement led by teens from all over Massachusetts to take back control of the health and minds of youth from the influence of Big Tobacco. Through the 84 chapters, young people work in their own communities or schools to fight tobacco addiction and the industry as well as come together from around the state to meet, network and strategize on how to fight tobacco and to take action at The 84 Statewide events.

Client Partners: Health Resources for Action (formerly The Medical Foundation) started this social marketing campaign which represents the 84% of young people in Massachusetts who do not smoke, to promote creative, individual and healthy lifestyles as well as tobacco prevention initiatives among high school students.
